A Call to Spy (2020) – Story

In the beginning of WWII, with Britain becoming desperate, Churchill orders his new spy agency — the Special Operations Executive (SOE) — to recruit and train women as spies. Their daunting mission: conduct sabotage and build a resistance. SOE's "spymistress," Vera Atkins (Stana Katic), recruits two unusual candidates: Virginia Hall (Sarah Megan Thomas), an ambitious American with a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan (Radhika Atpe), a Muslim pacifist. Together, these women help to undermine the Nazi regime in France, leaving an unmistakable legacy in their wake. Inspired by true stories.

A Call to Spy (2020) – Review

This was an unexpected and thrilling story. While it manages to sustain the forward throttle of a classic war narrative, it spends quality time focused on the characters and the intrigue of their lives. The facts of these historical figures has been revealed before but these stories are too rarely told and this movie manages to dig in to discover a whole other level of sacrifice, compulsion, and the undaunted yearning of the human spirit to have a purpose and a live a life of meaning. Bravo/a to these women and men who risked everything to get us out from the thumb of a fascist tyrant.
